The New Port Richey Elks history began on May 21, 1963 when we received our Dispensation for a Lodge. On July 10, 1963 we received our charter.
New Port Richey Elks first Exalted Ruler was Jack Jones. The original Lodge location was 2284 U.S. Highway 19 North in New Port Richey. Our first female Exalted Ruler was Marie Frazen from 1999 to 2000.
On October 20, 1987 the purchase of land at 7201 Congress Street was completed for $150,000. Construction started on the Lodge’s new building soon after. Due to it’s large size, construction was completed in 1988. With over 17,600 square feet under the roof, our Lodge is one of the largest in the District.
Our Lodge is well known for it’s large amenities. This includes a massive bar in the membership lounge area that can accommodate four bartenders at once. The lounge also has a dance floor and stage for live music performances.
The restaurant style kitchen can cook hundreds of meals with ease. It’s named after the founding members, the ‘Jolly Corks.’ With two serving ‘windows’, they provide easy access to both the lounge and the main hall.
The main event hall can accommodate over 450 people. The raised stage is perfect for our large live performances. The hall is named after David Luikart, the first and currently the only New Port Richey Elk member to become the President of the Florida Elks in 1990.
In 1904, the Florida State Elks Association was formed. Consisting of over 56,000 Elks in nearly 100 Lodges, the Association continues to grow in membership with the State’s population growth.
The history of the Florida State Elks Association in giving back to the community is well established. Florida Elks are known for the Army of Hope project, the Elks Children’s Therapy Program, and the 400 acre youth camp in Umatilla.
There are 14 districts in Florida and is governed by a Board of Directors. Funding for the State’s major charity projects is through the Harry-Anna Investment Fund, Inc. More information is available here.
The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks was established on February 16, 1868 in New York City. Charles Algernon Sidney Vivian was elected to head the new Fraternal Order of an original 15 members. The brotherhood quickly grew in size and locations. Today, there are over 2,000 Lodges all over the country.
Over the years, some famous individuals happened to be Elk members. President John F. Kennedy, actor Clint Eastwood, football coach Vince Lombardi, quarterback Eli Manning, and TV personality Jim Cramer are a few. You can see more famous Elks here.
The Elks national charities focus on scholarships, youth sports, drug awareness, Americanism, and Veterans. Each year, the Elks raise over $80 million dollars for local communities.
The New Port Richey Elks Lodge 2284 believes in patriotism, charity, justice, brotherly love, and fidelity.
